Help Prevent Repetitive Strain Injuries

work place ergonomics

Work place ergonomics what's it all about? For many people who spend their workday at a computer, it all starts with a minor twinge in the wrist. Unfortunately, that twinge often escalates into acute pain radiating from the hand to the elbow.

Carpal tunnel syndrome and other types of RSI or repetitive strain injuries can have a serious effect on workers. One way to prevent these types of injuries is to have ergonomics in the work place.

What Is Work Place Ergonomics?

Probably the best definition for ergonomics in the workplace is that it is the science of fitting the workplace to the worker instead of forcing the worker to fit the workplace.

This means that the worker can adjust many aspects of the workstation to fit their body. This helps reduce the stress that causes so much pain and discomfort. From the angle of the desk chair seat to the height of the wrist rest on the keyboard shelf, the worker can move these and other components to what is most comfortable for them.

Tips for Implementing Office Ergonomics

There are several things that a worker can do to implementing workplace ergonomics.

  • First, pay attention to your posture.
  • Don’t lean forward. If you find this is something that you’re doing, then move your chair closer to the desk or move the desk closer to you.
  • Next, your wrists should always be in a neutral angle.
  • Make sure you don’t have to twist your neck to see your monitor.
  • Position the monitor so there is minimal glare. Use a document holder, as this will minimize the repetitive movement of looking up and down.
  • Sometimes, a different ergonomic desk chair or keyboard is all that is needed to relieve headaches, wrist and elbow pain, back aches, or a stiff neck.

These are some of the most common complaints that employees have who spend hours at a desk each day. You can find a number of sites online that detail how specific pieces of equipment can decrease specific symptoms, such as a using a wrist rest to alleviate wrist pain
