How Typing Ergonomics Can Improve Home Work Health

Typing ergonomics is very important to today’s office workers, home workers but most people may not be aware of it. The goal is to reduce the stress, strain, and wear on your joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments in your forearms, wrists, and hands.

OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration estimates that 95% of the time an officer worker is at their desk, they are typing and using a computer mouse.

There are many ergonomic computer components that can help reduce the risk of injuries from long hours in front of a computer, you also have to be aware of how you are working and not just what you are using to work.

Proper Typing Posture

In order to get the most benefit from an ergonomic keyboard, you must have it placed correctly in front of you. This means that the keyboard must be at the right height on your desk or in the keyboard tray.
Keep Wrist Straight

If it is not, your wrists will not be in a straight line with your hands, which can lead to strain and tension in your wrists. If you type in this position for long periods of time, you could develop carpal tunnel syndrome.

This is a musculoskeletal disorder that is caused by the compression of a nerve in your wrist. Pain, tingling, numbness, and poor circulation can result and in severe cases, surgery may be required to repair the damage.

Keep Feet Flat on Ground

Other points of typing ergonomics deal with your desk chair. You should have your feet flat on the ground and the back of your chair should provide support for your lumbar spine.

If your chair does not adjust properly, then find something to rest your feet on. Use a pillow behind your lower back, if needed, to provide the proper support. This helps reduce stress and strain, as well as promoting healthy blood circulation.

Your Hand Posture

This is important, too. Keep your fingers relaxed. Type with your fingertips and don’t press down the keys, but use a gentle tapping motion. Keeping your fingernails short can make this motion easier.

If possible, keep your wrists above the keyboard rather than resting on it unless it is ergonomically designed. This will help keep you from overstretching your fingers. Keep your mouse close to the keyboard to minimize the amount of movement necessary to use the mouse.

Prevent Long-Term Serious Problems

Typing ergonomics can help prevent carpal tunnel syndrome, as well as strain, stress, and fatigue on your hands, wrists and arms. The proper posture is vital to preventing injuries while at your desk. Just because you have all of the latest computer ergonomics does not mean that the principles of ergonomics should be forgotten
